Interactive SMC Workshop with University of Girona Students at Menzolit Granollers plant

Last week, Menzolit had the pleasure of hosting 22 students from the University of Girona’s Master’s of science in mechanics of materials & structures (MMS) and Master’s in Advanced structural analysis and design using composite materials (FRP++). The goal was to provide an in-depth look at Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) and showcase how theory meets practice in an industrial environment.

Our experts kicked off the day with a comprehensive overview of the properties and applications of SMC, highlighting its use in key industries such as automotive, truck, electrical, construction, and engineering. This theoretical session set the stage for the students to fully appreciate the material’s versatility.

The group then toured our manufacturing facilities in Granollers, where they witnessed SMC production in real time. This firsthand experience allowed them to observe each stage of the process, from raw material handling to final product inspection, and to ask questions about industry best practices.

A highlight of the visit was a live molding demonstration in our laboratory press. Students took part in the process of shaping a final part, gaining valuable insights into the nuances of material flow, cure times, and the overall SMC transformation from sheet to finished component.

The day wrapped up with a Q&A session, during which students and faculty shared their feedback on this unique combination of theory, plant tour, and hands-on molding. Their enthusiastic response reaffirmed our commitment to fostering strong connections between the academic and industrial sectors.

At Menzolit Vitroplast, we are dedicated to supporting the next generation of professionals in the composite materials field. We look forward to further collaborations with the University of Girona and other educational institutions to help shape the future of composite manufacturing.
